Speech Therapy

Are You In Need of Speech Therapy?

It can be difficult when dealing with a speech or communication disorder. Adult communication difficulties are common and come in many forms including word-finding deficits/aphasia (language disorders), dysarthria (a problem with motor control of speech), voice problems, and articulation difficulties. This is where speech therapy at Prairie Rehabilitation can help.

Communication deficits can cause a person to withdraw and become socially isolated.   In addition, individuals having problems with swallowing foods and liquids can also isolate themselves from social activities due to embarrassment and discomfort. More importantly, swallowing disorders may create serious health problems.

Speech therapy can help many adults improve their speech, communication, and swallowing skills. Improved communication allows the individual to enjoy participating in social events with friends and family, boosting morale, and quality of life.

If you’ve been living with a speech or swallowing disorder, don’t hesitate to contact Prairie Rehabilitation today in West Sioux Falls, East Sioux Falls, Tea, Worthington Avera, Worthington Oxford, Brandon, Fulda, Hartford, Lakefield or Central Sioux Falls. We’ll help you communicate comfortably once again!

How can I benefit from speech therapy?

If you or someone you love is having difficulty with their speech, communication, memory, or swallowing, reach out for an assessment with our skilled speech therapists.

They can expertly assess, identify and diagnose any problems with communication, cognition, or swallowing, and then provide the right therapies to improve them. There may be a neurological diagnosis, resulting in problems with muscle function in the tongue and throat.

Muscles of the tongue and throat need strength and coordination, just like the rest of the body’s muscles.  This is necessary in order to produce intelligible speech and to swallow food and liquid safely.

Our speech therapists educate and train their patients in a variety of neurological exercises and speech exercises to help with a wide array of speech and language, and swallowing difficulties. Our speech therapists also work to improve understanding, pronunciation, and forming of speech to help you communicate effectively.

What does a speech therapist do?

Speech-language pathologists (SLP), or speech therapists, are the only health care professionals specifically educated and prepared to evaluate and treat children and adults with speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing problems.

They address decreases in swallowing, cognitive, and/or communicative function following brain injury, stroke, and brain tumors, or coinciding with progressive conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

SLPs help people develop effective speaking and listening skills, improve loudness or quality of voice, preserve the pleasures associated with eating, or re-train cognitive skills, such as memory and word-finding.
